Higher oil prices boost Exxon 4Q profit 2 percent (AP)

NEW YORK ? Exxon Mobil's fourth-quarter profit rose 2 percent as higher oil prices offset a drop in production.

The world's largest publicly traded oil company said Tuesday that it sold crude between October and December for 27 percent more than one year ago. Natural gas prices also jumped 27 percent outside the United States.

Higher prices pushed net income to $9.4 billion, or $1.97 per share, in the fourth quarter, matching Wall Street expectations. It made $9.25 billion, or $1.85 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 15.6 percent to $121.6 billion in the latest quarter.

Exxon, based in Irving, Texas, said that production declined nearly 9 percent in the quarter, even

after spending a record $36.8 billion last year in search of new sources of crude and natural gas.

Exploration projects can take years to yield new production. And some of Exxon's biggest investments recently have been in U.S. natural gas fields, which so far haven't paid off because prices have dropped to their lowest level in a decade.

Crude production declined as some of its fields matured and produced less. And many contracts in foreign countries limit the amount of oil that Exxon can sell as prices rise. And natural gas demand fell in Europe as well.

Overall, earnings in Exxon's exploration and production business rose 18 percent offsetting a 63 percent drop in income from the company's refining business.

The company's refineries, which produce gasoline, diesel and other fuels, have struggled to pass on the higher cost of their primary input, which is crude. Exxon announced Sunday that it is selling its Japanese refining and marketing business to partner TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. for $3.9 billion following an extended slide in Japanese fuel demand.

Exxon's chemicals business also saw profits decline 49 percent.

For the full year, Exxon's net income rose 34.8 percent while revenue rose 26.9 percent.

Last week, Chevron Corp. said profits slipped 3.2 percent. ConocoPhillips reported a 66-percent increase in quarterly earnings, though much of that came from the sale of a pipeline and other assets. Royal Dutch Shell expects to report its financial results later this week.

Shares of Exxon Mobil Corp. fell 91 cents to $84.58 in early trading.

Pro Bowl 2012: Brandon Marshall's 4 Touchdown Catches Lifts AFC In Pro Bowl (VIDEO)

HONOLULU -- Brandon Marshall caught six passes for 176 yards and a Pro Bowl-record four touchdowns, and the AFC used a second-half surge to beat the NFC 59-41 on Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins wide receiver had a touchdown catch in each quarter, including an early 74-yarder and a 3-yarder in the fourth, in a game filled with highlight-reel catches. He was selected the game's MVP and his four TD catches set a Pro Bowl record.

The 59 points by the AFC set a Pro Bowl mark, and the 100 points scored by the two teams combined was the second highest, a touchdown shy of the 107 scored in 2004.

But it was clear from the start it was Marshall's day. He hauled in a deflected, go-ahead 47-yard TD pass from Andy Dalton, while on his back, to give the AFC a 38-35 lead late in the third quarter. It was Marshall's third TD catch of the game, tying Jimmy Smith's Pro Bowl record set in 2004.

Marshall, making his third Pro Bowl appearance, then nabbed a 3-yard TD pass from Dalton that gave the AFC a 52-35 lead with 8:25 left and put the game away.

The game featured 36 first-timers, including rookie quarterbacks Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers and Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals, who replaced Super Bowl quarterbacks Eli Manning and Tom Brady. Their selection made this Pro Bowl the first to feature two rookie signal callers.

While Dalton looked composed, Newton played horribly ? struggling to move the ball, stay in the pocket and find his targets, which drew some boos from the sun-splashed, sellout crowd of 48,423.

Newton finished 9 of 27 for 186 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Dalton, meanwhile, was 7 of 9 for 99 yards and two TDs.

On his first series, Newton overthrew a wide-open Tony Gonzalez over the middle, with the ball sailing into Eric Weddle's hands. The San Diego Chargers safety popped up to his feet and returned it 63 yards to the NFC 23, leading to a 37-yard FG by Sebastian Janikowski, which gave the AFC its first lead of the game at 31-28.

Newton recovered on the next series, airing out a 55-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to Panthers teammate Steve Smith, making it 34-31. But he was intercepted again on the next series.

With the Pro Bowlers unable to get out of third gear ? particularly on the offensive and defensive lines ? and hitting each other as though they were having a pillow fight, the Pro Bowl featured some good, bad and real ugly ? sometimes on the same play. For example, Aaron Rodgers caught a pass from himself. His throw was deflected at the line and he leaped to catch the ball and backpedaled for a 15-yard loss.

Rodgers was 13 of 17 for 141 yards and two TDs, giving him a quarterback rating of 139.6, higher than his NFL record 122.5 rating during the season. But he was watching late in the game as Newton struggled.

The NFC had three players with 100-yard yard receiving: Gonzalez (seven for 114), Larry Fitzgerald (6 for 111) and Smith (5 for 118).

The AFC and NFC traded score after score, and turnover after turnover in the first half.

Rodgers and Fitzgerald connected for a pair of scores on back-to-back plays to put the NFC up 14-0 early in the game.

After stopping the AFC on fourth down at midfield, Rodgers drove the NFC down the field and threw a 10-yard TD toss to Fitzgerald. Six seconds later, Rodgers aired a 44-yard rainbow in the end zone to Fitzgerald for another score after the NFC got the ball back with a surprise onside kick.

The reception was Fitzgerald's sixth career TD catch in the Pro Bowl, tying Gonzalez's record.

The AFC came right back and tied it up on two deep TD passes on the right side by Ben Roethlisberger. He threw a 34-yarder to rookie A.J. Green, and then connected with Marshall on a 74-yarder.

But Drew Brees and the NFC kept the scoring going. Just like in the regular season, Brees and Saints teammate Jimmy Graham hooked up to give the NFC a 21-14 lead in the second quarter. On fourth-and-goal, Brees zipped a pass to Graham for a 6-yard score and would later find Brandon Jennings for an 11-yard TD.

Antonio Gates pulled in a 27-yard TD from Chargers teammate Rivers as time expired in the half to tie it at 28.

Each AFC player earned a record $50,000 for the win, while the NFC players received $25,000.

Diddy's A 'Sweetheart,' 'Breaking Bad' Star Says

Rapper's Cîroc ad co-star, Aaron Paul, talks to MTV News about bro'ing it up in Vegas with the rap mogul.

Bad Boy Records boss and Cîroc spokesman Diddy assembled his very own "Rat Pack" for the vodka brand's latest campaign. With folks like "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul, Michael K. Williams, Chad Michael Murray and Jesse Williams onboard, the stylish gang does Vegas in retro-tinged ads directed by Anthony Mandler.

When MTV News caught up with Paul at the SAG Awards on Sunday night in L.A., he dished about how the hip-hop mogul recruited him for the sleek clip.

"It's so funny, Diddy is a huge fan of the show, and he called and asked if I wanted to be a part of his new Cîroc campaign," Paul recalled. "And I'm like, 'Hang out in Vegas with Diddy for a couple days? Yeah, I'll do that.' "

The commercial is a stylized, glamorous peek at what it might be like to chill with Diddy and his guys in Sin City. "It's great. I was really happy about it and I think there's going to be like three or four different versions of it coming out throughout the year," the actor revealed. Paul admitted that he had fun both on and off set, telling us he left Vegas "with money in my pockets."

Of course, now that he's one of the faces of the brand, Paul could be expected to give it a shining endorsement. But the Hollywood star kept it real: "I got to be honest, I never really had Cîroc [before the ads], but it's so good," he said. "They have a lot of flavored vodkas and they're really good, so buy Cîroc!"

It wasn't just Cîroc that Paul found surprisingly smooth but the hip-hop mogul himself.

"He's such a workhorse — he's like such a machine — but he's the kindest guy," Paul said. "He really is such a nice guy to everybody, so I learned that about him 'cause I didn't know anything about him before.

"A sweetheart, Diddy's a sweetheart," he continued. "He sent me a really nice engagement present, and I'm like 'Wow, that's so nice.' I just got engaged [to Lauren Parsekian, so] it was so nice of him."

Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 SAG Awards winners, and don't miss all the fashion from the red carpet!

Keep the dishwasher and fridge apart; save a bundle on energy

Why would you put a device that gets hot next to a device that gets cold? They would both be using energy to fight the effects of the appliance next door.

Your dishwasher gets hot. Your dishwasher also gets moist, meaning it?s harder to cool down the air around it. Your refrigerator gets cold. So does your freezer.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Recent posts

Why would you put a device that gets hot next to a device that gets cold? No insulation is perfect, after all, so they would both be using energy to fight the effects of the appliance next door.

So many elements of frugality and personal finance come down to paying attention to the details. This is one of those little detail things that so many people will overlook, but over time it just continually costs you money.

When we moved into our current home, one of the things that annoyed me about it was the relatively small kitchen. It wasn?t much larger than the kitchen in our small apartment, having only a small counter that the other did not have.

Even worse, the refrigerator was installed next to the dishwasher, and the only way to fix it would involve an extensive reworking of our kitchen, as the cabinets are all formed around slots for the appliances.

There?s no doubt that energy is lost in this process. The dishwasher, while running a cycle, puts off a tremendous amount of heat, some of which you can feel on the side of the refrigerator. I often hear the refrigerator kicking on just a minute or two after starting a dishwasher load due to the rise in internal temperature of the refrigerator. It?s actively costing us money.

So, what can we do about this? At the moment, not much. Other than the side-by-side appliance issue, our kitchen is laid out fairly well for its size. Although we?ve looked at alternate arrangements, none of them have provided enough value to be worth the cost of rearranging things.

One short-term fix we?ve done is to insert a piece of thin insulation between the two appliances. There was just enough room for a small piece of insulation to fit between the two, so we purchased a piece of heat-resistant insulation. While this isn?t a perfect fix, it does reduce the heat directly transferred between the two devices.

We also try to make an effort to keep the refrigerator door closed while the dishwasher is running. Opening the refrigerator door while the dishwasher is running causes the cool and dry air to rush out and the warm, damp air to move in, making it that much harder for the refrigerator to do its job.

However, we do plan to build a new house in the future. When we do that, we?ll make sure to avoid having a ?hot? appliance next to a ?cold? one. In fact, in our latest design sketches (a fun project that Sarah and I work on sometimes in the evenings is doing sketches on the computer of what our dream house would be like), the refrigerator and dishwasher are pretty far apart, with a large counterspace between the refrigerator and the sink and the dishwasher on the other side of the sink.

Another thing to watch out for: avoid having your refrigerator or freezer next to an air vent, particularly if you live in northern climates. During the winter, your air vent will be blowing out hot air, which you don?t want blowing directly onto your refrigerator. This is something else to consider when designing or re-designing a kitchen, as it?s all about the energy efficiency.

Will this save you a lot of money or a little? It?s really hard to measure, as it depends on the modes you?re running in your refrigerator and dishwasher, the amount of insulation between the two, and countless other factors. However, I?d have to be oblivious to not hear our refrigerator kicking on and running almost contiunously when our dishwasher is running. If a simple kitchen design decision will make a real difference in how much your refrigerator is running, it?s well worth keeping in mind as a principle.

Graphene Membranes Superpermeable to Water

Water is formed from hydrogen and oxygen. It is not inert, it decomposes and reforms constantly. So, no, water molecules are not at least 4.5 billion years old.

The hydrogen and oxygen atoms that make up water, or at least most of them, may well be much older than that. Particularly the hydrogen, which may be over 13 billion years old.

Steam beta journeys to Android and iOS, for select invitees

Our friends at Joystiq are members of a privileged club of which we are not. We've both downloaded and installed the mobile version of Steam -- now available as a free beta download for Android and iOS -- but where they found Mac and PC games for sale, along with the ability to chat with friends, browse profiles and read gaming news, we were greeted with red text that states our accounts are not part of the beta. Damn our luck! For those interested to give Valve's handiwork a spin, it seems that downloading and installing the app puts you in the queue for a future invite. Won't you join us in the line?

Information from Australian PM's aide led to clash (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? A clash between protesters and Australian police that forced bodyguards to rush Prime Minister Julia Gillard out of an event appears to have been set off by information released by one of Gillard's own aides.

The aide, media adviser Tony Hodges, resigned. Gillard's office said Friday that he told someone that opposition leader Tony Abbott would be at the awards ceremony where the clash occurred. A spokesperson said in a statement that the information was passed on to indigenous-rights protesters who were demonstrating nearby.

The protesters were angry about comments Abbott made about their movement, and about 200 of them surrounded the Canberra restaurant where the ceremony was being held. Gillard stumbled as she was rushed out and lost a shoe, which the protesters picked up.

Gillard said Saturday that Hodges acted alone, and that she accepted his resignation because she considered his conduct unacceptable. She said she was upset that protesters disrupted the awards ceremony, which honored Australians for their service and courage during recent natural disasters.

Abbott on Saturday demanded more details and an investigation into what he called a "serious security breach." He told Sky News the incident appeared to be an attempt to "trigger something potentially dire for political advantage."

"Trouble was triggered and it seems that someone from the prime minister's office had a very big hand in all of that," he said.

Gillard said the suggestion that she played a role in the clash was "deeply offensive" and added that "it is absolutely typical of Mr Abbott's negativity and his tendency to go too far."

The restaurant where Thursday's clash occurred is close to the so-called Aboriginal Tent Embassy, where the protesters had demonstrated peacefully earlier in the day. That long-standing, ramshackle collection of tents and temporary shelters is a center point of protests against Australia Day, which marks the arrival of the first fleet of British colonists in Sydney on Jan. 26, 1788.

The Tent Embassy celebrated its 40th anniversary on Thursday, and Abbott had earlier angered activists by saying it was time the embassy "moved on." Abbott said Friday that his comment had been misinterpreted, and that he never meant to imply the embassy should be torn down.

The blue suede shoe Gillard lost was handed to a security guard at Parliament House late Friday and taken to her office.

(This version corrects that adviser resigned rather than was fired.)

Japan posts first annual trade deficit since 1980 (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan reported its first annual trade deficit since 1980 as it imported expensive energy to offset shortfalls caused by the devastating tsunami and manufacturers shifted production overseas to avoid the damage inflicted by the strong yen.

The 2.49 trillion yen ($32 billion) deficit for 2011 reflected a 2.7 percent decline in the value of Japan's exports to 65.55 trillion yen ($843 billion). In December, the trade balance was a deficit of 205.1 billion yen, according to the Ministry of Finance figures released Wednesday.

"It reflects fundamental changes in Japan's economy, particularly among manufacturers," said Hideki Matsumura, senior economist at Japan Research Institute. "Japan is losing its competitiveness to produce domestically."

"It's gotten difficult for manufacturers to export, so they're they've moved production abroad so that products sold outside the country are made outside the country," he said.

The yen's surge to record levels against the dollar and euro has made Japanese exports more expensive and also erodes the value of foreign earned income when brought home. Recently, Nissan Motor Co. and Panasonic Corp. have shifted some of their output to factories overseas.

At the same time, Japan is facing intense competition from South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, where labor and production costs are cheaper.

Japanese manufacturers have been battered by a host of negatives in the past year. The tsunami temporarily disrupted the production of automobile makers and others. Weakness in the U.S. economy and Europe's debt problems and recent flooding in Thailand, where many Japanese automakers have assembly lines, also contributed to export declines.

Another major factor behind the figures was the impact of the expensive energy imports Japan turned to after the March disaster touched off a nuclear crisis and led the country to shut down, or not restart, a large portion of its reactors, said Martin Schulz, senior economist with the Fujitsu Research Institute.

He said pressure to import energy will continue to weigh heavily on Japan for the next year, but will subside as the country pursues greater efficiency measures.

Much of Japan's oil and natural gas is imported from the Middle East, with which Japan had a 10.88 trillion yen trade deficit last year, up 33 percent, figures showed.

Japan still has a trade surplus with the U.S., although that is shrinking. For 2011, exports exceeded imports by 4.10 trilion yen ($52.6 billion), down 8.2 percent from a year earlier. Exports to the U.S. declined 2.8 percent to 10.02 trillion yen during the year, while imports inched up 0.2 percent to 5.9 trillion.

Japan had a 1.57 trillion yen trade surplus with China for the year. A breakdown of figures showed a trade deficit with mainland China, but a big surplus with Hong Kong.

Trade with Germany was fairly balanced last year as imports grew nearly 10 percent to 1.86 trillion yen. Exports came to 1.87 trillion yen, giving Japan a relatively small trade surplus of 16 billion yen.

The turmoil in Europe and the U.S. has driven up the yen as global investors flock to the currency as a relative safe haven. The yen hit multiple historic highs against the dollar, and touched a record against the euro earlier this month as well.

The yen is trading at around 78 to the dollar recently, a level that is extremely painful for exporters. Five years ago, the dollar was trading above 120 yen.

Matsumura believes that Japan will likely log another trade deficit this year amid prospects for high energy prices and a persistently strong yen, but that renewed strength in the global and Asian regional economies could put Japan back into the black in 2013.

U.N. probes new charges of peacekeeper sex abuse in Haiti (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti, whose members have been accused of rape, assault and sparking a cholera epidemic in the country, is investigating new allegations that peacekeepers sexually abused minors.

"The U.N. Secretariat regrets to confirm that, on 16 January 2012, the U.N. mission in Haiti, MINUSTAH, alerted headquarters about two allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse involving minors in Haiti," spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters on Monday.

He said one of the cases involved U.N. police officers based in the capital Port-au-Prince.

"The accused officers have been removed from their duties to reduce any contact with the local population while the investigation is underway," he said.

He added that the second case involved at least one member of a U.N. police unit in Gonaives.

"The United Nations is outraged by these allegations and takes its responsibility to deal with them extremely seriously," Nesirky said.

MINUSTAH is no stranger to negative press in Haiti.

Many Haitians have called for the complete withdrawal of the force due to allegations that Nepalese U.N. troops brought a deadly cholera epidemic to the country after their camp latrines contaminated a river. That sparked riots in 2010.

Last year, the U.N. force faced renewed public protests over allegations a group of Uruguayan troops raped a man. In December the United Nations said it was investigating allegations of assault and attempted homicide by Brazilian peacekeepers.

In October 2011, the U.N. Security Council voted to reduce the size of the unpopular force by 2,750, bringing MINUSTAH to just under 10,600 troops and police. That brought the size of the force back to its level before the January 2010 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince.

Hollywood mourns loss of Indie film visionary (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The film community is mourning the death of Indie veteran Bingham Ray on Monday following a stroke.

Ray was only 57 when he died after suffering a stroke at the Sundance Film Festival.

Head of the San Francisco Film Festival when he died, Ray had been a co-founder of October Films, and later headed United Artists.

October was folded into USA Films, which later became Focus Features. And on Monday, James Schamus, CEO of Focus Features, mourned the loss of his fellow indie veteran.

"All of us at Focus are blessed to know that Bingham -- the very definition of an independent spirit -- is part our DNA," Schamus said in a statement to TheWrap. "If anyone could claim paternity of us, it would be he.

"I wish, on behalf of all my colleagues here, I had something meaningful and resonant to say, but the loss is too sudden and too great -- I simply refuse, at least for this one day, to speak of Bingham in the past tense."

"It's a tremendous loss," Joe Pichirallo, a former producer who is now undergraduate chair of the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film & Television at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, told TheWrap. "He will be remembered for his charm, wicked humor and his passion for films. No one was more passionate about films than Bingham."

One of the first things Pichirallo did upon joining NYU was ask Bingham to teach strategies for independent film producing.

"I knew he'd be a great teacher because he has been a great mentor, and I'm so glad he had that opportunity," Pichirallo said.

Eddie Schmidt, the Academy Award-nominated producer of the 2006 "This Film Is Not Yet Rated," remembered Ray as "a protector and defender of artists and their visions."

He said that Ray was "tenacious and adaptable to the times as things change in the industry, and those are qualities that are rare."

Ray appeared in "This Film Is Not Yet Rated," in which he said, describing the MPAA ratings board, "I'm going to use the F-word. It's a fascist system. I believe it's a fascist organization."

Schmidt recalled the movie's premiere at, in fact, the Sundance Film Festival.

"He was there," Schmidt said, "and he slapped me on the back and said, 'Way to go,' and that was actually very meaningful."

In an email to TheWrap, the critic Roger Ebert said that "at every festival I attended, Bingham was always there, always friendly, never rushed, always curious, always searching for good films. He had good taste, and sometimes was more optimistic about a film's box office prospects than its makers were. Outside the business, people like Bingham Ray are below the radar, but any movie lover checking his credits at IMDb would realize they had many reasons to be thankful to him."

"I am shocked and heartbroken by his passing," said Chris McGurk, who knew Ray for 20 years. "He was a brilliant, supportive voice for independent film and we will all miss him dearly," he told TheWrap. "His passion, fire and spirit will live on inside all of us who knew him and whose lives he touched. My heart goes out to his wife, Nancy, and his family.

McGurk, now the CEO of Cinedigm Corp., is the former vice chair and COO of MGM and the former president and COO of Universal Pictures. While at MGM, he brought Ray on as president of United Artists. When he was at Universal, that company bought October Films.

Rick Allen, the CEO of SnagFilms and Indiewire -- where Ray was a consultant -- said in a statement that "the film world knew him as a fierce champion of artists, always looking for new ways to spotlight their work and increasing their freedom to create it. At SnagFilms and Indiewire, we knew this track record when we asked Bingham to join us and help chart the next phase of our growth."

He added, "What I did not know until we had the chance to work together was how brilliant, honorable and hysterically funny Bingham Ray was."

Allen said that Ray "taught all of us the context for our efforts -- the history of independent film in and before our time. ... He infused everything with his unquenchable passion for film, filmmakers and the audiences who love them. And he made us laugh very, very hard and often."

Teri Schwartz, dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, called Ray "a true visionary" who was "universally respected by the entire filmmaking community. He was a friend, supporter and mentor to so many filmmakers. His remarkable intellect, generous spirit and passion for films will be sorely missed."

CameraBag 1.93 (for iPhone)

CameraBag 1.93 (for iPhone) ($1.99) is largely the same as version 1.4 of the app, which I reviewed in 2008, with some modest enhancements. On the upside, it now has 16 filters (up from 10 in CameraBag 1.4), it?s more stable, supports higher-resolution images, and lets you e-mail images from within the app. The downsides are that it still doesn?t let you adjust the images, and there?s no integration with social media. CameraBag is a solid and fun app, if one that's behind the curve, expecially when compared with newcomers like Instagram (free, 3 stars).

Other photo apps, such as Camera Genius ($1.99, 3.5 stars) and Camera+ ($1.99, 3 stars) now offer not only creative filters but shooting aids like timers and burst mode, and the ability to tweak contrast, saturation. Most can also upload images to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, or their own online galleries. But CameraBag still has its place, and will appeal to those who crave a simple way to fancy up their iPhone photos.

CameraBag lets you transform your photos to resemble vintage photographic styles simply by clicking on the appropriate filter. Photo buffs will find it does a creditable job of imitating historical photo techniques, and even those who just want to spruce up their iPhone images should enjoy experimenting with this app. If you want to edit your photos, or upload them to social media or photo-sharing sites, though, you?ll have to use other tools.

Operating CameraBag is simple. When you open the program, you see a dark screen with four icons at the bottom: snap a picture, email an image, save an image, or load an image from your iPhone's photo library. This is actually a plus over some of the newer apps, which only let you manipulate photos taken within the app. After you select or shoot a picture, the name of the last-used filter appears above the image, such as Colorcross or Infrared.

Vintage-Style Filters

By tapping on the filter name, you get a list of all 16 filters. Their one-word names, such as Plastic, Fisheye, and 1974, give a clue as to the filter's nature. Tapping a name selects the corresponding filter. Shoot a fresh picture or import one from the photos stored on your iPhone, and a thumbnail of the image with filter applied appears in the center of the screen. Swiping a finger across the screen advances to the next filter, so if you keep swiping, you can see the image with all of the effects applied in turn.

The information icon at the screen?s top-left lets you access a Photo Options menu lets you save the original photo (if you?re shooting images from within the app), use borders or cropping (which, when enabled, are automatically applied when appropriate to a particular filter), and turn filters off so they don?t appear when you're swiping through the thumbnails. You can see the provenance for Instagram in some of this.

The filters themselves cover a wide range of styles, from professional and specialized techniques (Magazine, Fisheye, Infrared) to consumer snapshots (1974, Instant) and toy cameras (Plastic). Every photo is an opportunity to experiment, and you can't be quite sure in advance which filters will work best on a particular image without trying each of them.

Helga and Lolo mimic the pictures taken with the Holga and Lomo hobbyist cameras with similar names. These cameras have cult followings both despite and because of their significant optical flaws, which can create unusual effects. The filter names are slight variations on the camera names, presumably to avoid infringing on the camera companies' trademarks.

Helga produces significant vignetting (a reduction in brightness at the edges of photos, particularly in the corners), while Lolo pictures appear oversaturated, often to the point of garishness. Helga generally didn't appeal to me. Lolo's high saturation, on the other hand, detracted from many indoor shots and portraits, but it nicely enhanced some outdoor scenes. It was particularly good at twilight shots, for which it really punched up the color and brightness of the sky and city lights. Both Helga and Lolo crop images to a square format, as the cameras they're modeled after do.

Cinema crops images to widescreen format. This is good if the images were taken in landscape orientation, but it lops off much of the top and bottom of portrait-mode images. Not the most exciting filter.

Colorcross provides vivid yet hazy, darkroom-style colors, while Plastic oversaturates colors, usually reds and yellows. Mono provides good, balanced black-and-white images while 1962 produces high-contrast monochrome images reminiscent of that era. Silver evokes the early days of photography, with a silvery blue (and sometimes yellow) tint. Magazine provides rich tones, while Italiano gives the images a mild, sepia tint and adds a trace of vignetting. Lightleak adds a streak of brightness across the image.

The 1974 effect reproduces the style of the day's photos by rendering color images with a slightly yellowish tinge that I generally found warm and cheery. And, as you'd expect, Fisheye distorts images as though they were shot through a fisheye lens, while Infrared mimics the result you'd get shooting through an infrared filter. I liked the ghostly, negative-like look of many of the Infrared images I created. Fisheye works best in shots of overarching branches, tall buildings from below, or funhouse portraits.

The Instant mode provides wide-bordered Polaroid-style snapshots?though you won't experience the anticipation of watching the image slowly materialize on film. Original lets you save the image unchanged, even if you just shot it from within CameraBag.

CameraBag lets you choose between 4 settings for image size (width of 600, 800, or 1,200 pixels, or full size). Even at full size, saving an image is relatively fast (about 4 seconds).

A Little Too Retro

Whether you're a photography buff or just want to spruce up your iPhone photos, you're sure to have fun producing many intriguing versions of your iPhone images with CameraBag. Experimenting with the app is an adventure: Before you apply a filter, you never know quite what you're going to get. Some of your variations created with these retro filters may even look better than your original.

But speaking of retro, CameraBag just hasn?t kept up with the times: Many iPhone photo apps are more full-featured. Camera Genius lets you upload images directly to Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter, while Camera+ includes those services while adding Picasa and Tumblr to the mix. Camera Genius offers a wider range of filters, including many vintage ones, while Camera+ provides 27 different effects. They let you fine-tune your images, as do both Photoshop Express and Editors? Choice Snapseed (4 stars, $4.99), which are focused on editing. With CameraBag, you get to choose between filters, but that?s about all.

Hamas? Gaza prime minister vows never to cede ground in struggle with Israel

TUNIS, Tunisia ? Hamas? prime minister in Gaza says the anti-Israeli militant group will never give up its arms, its territory or its claims on Jerusalem on behalf of the Palestinians.

Ismail Haniyeh spoke to a cheering crowd of 5,000 in the Tunisian capital Sunday.

He predicted difficult days ahead for Israel, which is grappling with how to respond to the Arab Spring, a series of popular uprisings that began in Tunisia a year ago.

The rally, held at a sports stadium, was organized by the Islamist Ennahda party, which recently won Tunisian elections.

At one entrance, people walked over a piece of cloth sporting the Star of David, and many shouted anti-Israeli slogans.

But not heard was ?Kill the Jews!? a slogan used by ultraconservatives three days earlier upon Haniyeh?s arrival.

Google Maps indoor navigation: yeah, it works at CES

Google Maps 6.0 brought a promise of indoor navigation back in November of last year, but outside of a few dozen airports, transit hubs and retail outlets, we had no idea where it was or wasn't implemented. Turns out, Google (smartly) mapped out lots of Las Vegas before the annual Consumer Electronics Show, as many of our contemporaries have pointed out over at The Sands and Venetian. We also confirmed that indoor mapping worked here at CES Unveiled, and given the dearth of wireless connectivity inside most of Vegas' frequented locales, it's certainly a blessing that we'll be taking advantage of.

Facebook Turns Your Timeline Into Moo Business Cards, First ...

In a move which is likely to catapult UK startup Moo onto a new international stage, the company has become the only one to deeply integrate its ?social business cards? with the Facebook platform today. Taking pictures from users? Facebook Timeline information and photography, users will now be able to create 50 personalised business cards for ?10/$15. But in a promotion from today Moo is giving away cards to the first 200,000 users, equivalent to 10 million cards.

The cards can feature a different photo image on the front of the cards together with a favourite quote or saying on the reverse. This will doubly act as a promo for Facebook?s Timelime as people will be able to take snapshots of their lives from their Timelines and put them onto the cards.

Facebook spokesperson Jillian Stefanki says ?The MOO.COM integration makes it possible for people to take [the Timeline] experience with them offline.?

Richard Moross, CEO and Founder of MOO.COM told me the deal was put together daily quickly after an ?enthusiastic Moo user? at Facebook, who was also a product manager, contacted him about a partnership.

The integration took about four or five weeks as although Moo had a basic integration with Facebook, ?this is a more involved integration and we have had more exposure inside Facebok than before? says Moross.

Moo is the only partner for these social cards so far and won the contract with Facebook because it has ?been doing this for 5/6 years so we are the most experienced online printer in working with social networks,? says Moross.

It also fulfils his original vision of the ?social business card?: ?My original idea was for a modern business card that connected online with offline, so it?s funny that years later this is now complete and it?s something which is very satisfying personally to me.?

He says Moo remains confident that it will be able to delver cards to anywhere in the world, given it has already done so in 200 different countries.

?We?re not quite sure where this could go but we?re confident we can scale this. We have capacity to print millions of cards a day and we?ve done this with many of partners before,? he says.

Moo?s revenues are made mostly in the US business followed by Europe then Asia.

Moo?s trump card, as it were, was its initial integration with Flickr. Now its Facebook integration could see the value of this startup soar. The company was backed by Atlas Venture, Index Ventures and The Accelerator Group with a $5m Series A round in 2006 but has not needed to raise money since.

He?s my personalised Facebook card:

Romney in position of strength in Iowa (AP)

LE MARS, Iowa ? Mitt Romney is the clear Republican front-runner in Iowa in the final days before the first voting in the 2012 presidential election. But that's where the clarity ends in this unpredictable nomination race.

Five others are fighting, as they have all year, to emerge as the Romney alternative.

The ascendant Rick Santorum and Rick Perry are battling to win over social conservatives. Libertarian-leaning Ron Paul is working to preserve support that's starting to slip. Newt Gingrich is struggling to end his sharp slide. Michele Bachmann is hardly a factor.

"It may be Romney's to lose at this point," said John Stineman, an Iowa GOP campaign strategist. "And it's a battle among the rest."

While much can happen before Tuesday's caucuses, public surveys and internal polls as well as interviews with Republican activists, Iowa voters and political operatives both inside and outside the candidates' campaigns suggest that Romney is in strong contention to win Tuesday's caucuses.

Paul, who surged this month, has faded some following attacks on his foreign policy positions. Santorum and Perry are climbing, but evangelical Republicans and cultural conservatives continue to divide their support among the field ? giving Romney an opening. And a large contingent of voters hasn't yet locked in on a candidate as the clock winds down.

Despite rapidly shifting dynamics, two things were clear on the final weekend before the caucuses: The yearlong effort to establish a consensus challenger to Romney had failed, and Romney's carefully laid plan to survive Iowa was succeeding. It relies on conservative voters failing to rally behind one candidate.

He was either slightly ahead or in a virtual tie with Paul in NBC/Marist and CNN/Time polls, with Santorum running third. The Des Moines Register, which has endorsed Romney, was releasing its final poll before the caucuses later Saturday.

With the stakes high, the candidates pressed their closing messages Saturday and released final TV ads while volunteers and staffers canvassed the state to both persuade undecided and mobilize backers.

Notably absent was Paul, the Texas congressman who returned to his home state late Friday. He had no campaign events in Iowa until Monday; his campaign said he was spending the holiday weekend with his family. Paul, however, is appearing on several Sunday morning news programs.

By Saturday afternoon, an upbeat Romney had returned to Iowa from a brief trip to New Hampshire. In Le Mars, he drew a crowd of 300 people, including supporter Alan Lucken, who shouted to the candidate: "You're going to win."

"I'm planning on it," Romney said and later told a reporter, "I sure hope to. I'll tell you that."

In another show of confidence, Romney promised to return to Iowa, a perennial general election battleground, if he is the nominee.

"I'm going to be back in Iowa ? we're going to fight, we're going to win Iowa in the general election," Romney said as he closed his remarks in Le Mars.

He spent the afternoon in conservative Plymouth County and more populous Woodbury County, both winning areas for him during the 2008 race. He finished second in the state that year behind former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, although Arizona Sen. John McCain later captured the party's nomination.

At one point, he promised to veto the DREAM Act, which would provide conditional permanent residency for some illegal immigrants. While Romney has faced criticism for changing stance on some social issues, he has held to a strict position on illegal immigration during his 2012 campaign.

Romney planned to campaign Monday in cities he won four years ago ? Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Dubuque. He wants to maximize the edge he holds in critical areas rather than risk underperforming in places where more ardent conservatives are leery of his Mormon faith and shifting positions on social issues.

Santorum, meanwhile, looked to capitalize on his recent surge in polls by focusing on southern portions of rural Iowa, where the former Pennsylvania senator has made a point of visiting more often than his rivals. And he rolled out a new TV ad casting him as "a trusted conservative who gives us the best chance to take back America."

He claimed momentum Saturday ? and acknowledged his opponents had more money ? as he traveled with his daughter Liz, who quit college to campaign for her father.

"We believe that ultimately, money doesn't matter in Iowa," Santorum said at a packed stop in Indianola. "You can't buy Iowa. You've got to go out and work for Iowa votes."

Perry's advisers see Santorum within reach and have begun attacking the former senator for having supported spending on home-state pet projects, an unpopular position in these tough economic times.

"I think the world of Rick Santorum. He's got a great family. But we've got some real difference when it comes to fiscal issues," Perry told supporters in Boone. "Those differences couldn't be clearer when it comes to important issues in this election like spending."

Santorum, in turn, charged Perry with hypocrisy: "He had a paid lobbyist in Washington looking for earmarks."

Perry has seen his fortunes improve some in recent days in part because he and his allies have advertised the most aggressively. Of the more than $3 million in television ads he has spent, the final round included spots promoting him as a Washington outsider, and Santorum, Bachmann, Gingrich and Paul as insiders.

Perry announced he would travel directly from Iowa to Greenville, S.C., the day after the caucuses, bypassing next-up New Hampshire. Still, he said he planned to participate in two debates in New Hampshire next weekend.

Gingrich, for his part, was spending the weekend pleading anew with Iowans to side with him despite what they have learned about him through millions of dollars in attack advertising by Paul and a political action committee bankrolled by Romney supporters.

"Iowa could actually dramatically change people's understanding of what works in politics if you repudiate that kind of negativity," Gingrich told 150 people at a Council Bluffs restaurant Saturday.

Illustrating the split among social conservatives, Des Moines-area talk radio conservatives Simon Conway and Steve Deace made competing endorsements Friday ? Conway for Perry, Deace for Gingrich.

Bachmann, who had fallen since last summer to single digits in Iowa polls, spent the day at her Des Moines-area state campaign headquarters rallying supporters and volunteers. Ten protesters connected to the nationwide Occupy movement were arrested outside the office in a suburban strip mall. Bachmann did not come outside of the building.

Mount Rainier National Park ranger killed, gunman loose (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? A heavily armed gunman shot and killed a ranger in Mount Rainier National Park on Sunday after fleeing a traffic stop, and authorities closed the park in Washington state as a manhunt got underway, officials said.

The ranger, a 34-year-old mother of two young children, was killed after she stopped the gunman's vehicle at a roadblock shortly after another ranger tried to stop the same car about a mile away, park spokesman Kevin Bacher said in a statement.

"The suspect fled and is still at-large on foot," Bacher said. "We are now confirming that park ranger Margaret Anderson has been shot and killed at Mount Rainier National Park."

Authorities closed the park on the west side of the snow-capped Cascade mountain range, which welcomes around 2 million visitors a year, after the shooting and authorities were scouring the area for the gunman, park officials said.

The shooting came on an unseasonably mild New Year's holiday that saw visitors flock to the park, about 80 miles southeast of Seattle, for popular winter activities including snowboarding and cross-country skiing.

Visitors still in the park were hunkered down as daylight dwindled, including about 85 visitors and 15 park staff who were being held inside a visitor center until it was deemed safe to leave, spokeswoman Lee Taylor said.

"They're safe and secure where they are," she said. "I don't know how long we're going to ask them to stay there. We certainly don't want them driving down the road if there's a gunman who might take a pot shot at them."

Andrew Bunning, a front desk clerk at the 25-room National Park Inn where park visitors often stay, told Reuters that all park visitors including hotel guests were on lockdown.

"We're still on lockdown and everyone is staying safe," Bunning said. "Right now, we're trying to get everyone fed."

PERSON OF INTEREST NAMED

A Pierce County sheriff's spokesman told Seattle's KIRO-7 news that law enforcement had named Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, as a person of interest who could be involved in the shooting and who may be heavily armed with assault rifles and body armor.

The King County Sheriff's office said the same man was also wanted for questioning in a shooting at a New Year's party earlier in the day at a house in Skyway, just outside of Seattle, in which four people were shot and wounded.

"Witnesses said multiple persons at the party were armed and had a "show and tell" with their guns," the sheriff's office said in a statement, adding that a shootout erupted following an argument over a weapon.

Numerous rounds were fired but the sheriff's department said authorities did not know how many people fired their weapons or who had initiated the gunfire. Three people fled the scene before police arrived.

Detectives had managed to locate two of those people and had been working with the family of the third to persuade him to come forward and talk to police, but later learned that he had been named as a person of interest in the park shooting.

Officials could not say why rangers had tried to stop the gunman's car at the 368-square-mile national park, home to two national park lodges. The FBI was assisting in the manhunt, park officials said.

Park authorities described Anderson, the ranger who was killed, as a committed public servant who was married to another ranger.

"So it's a horrible tragedy. It's a terrible loss of life of somebody who had dedicated herself to serving the public," the park spokeswoman, Taylor, told CNN.

NBA: Stephen Curry Has Nike Lab Analyze His Ankle & Sneakers

Stephen Curry has had four days for his ankle to heal from a second sprain this month. He had surgery in May in hopes of strengthening the ankle, which endured at least three severe sprains last season and caused him to miss a portion of the exhibition season and eight regular-season games. ?Read more after the jump.

@Shay_Marie x @gametimegirl

?There?s a little bit of pressure to get back, but, either way, we still have the bigger picture in mind when it comes to my injury,? Curry said. ?Obviously, Monta and his family are of the utmost importance right now. It?s a big game, and we?ve got a lot of momentum going, but I?m not going to force it just because he?s not here. I am working pretty hard to get back, so one of us is out there.

?Either way, I think our team is ready to take that challenge.?

Curry used Thursday?s off day to fly to the Nike laboratory in Beaverton, Ore. He had his foot and shoes analyzed for fit and figured out that his ankle naturally rolls to the outside, which is how each sprain has occurred.

As he waits for the complete analysis, Curry has decided to switch from the Nike Hyperdunks to the Nike Hyperbraves, a shoe that he says fits lower and wider on his foot. The Warriors? medical staff is taping Curry?s ankle a little looser so as not to affect his movement or shooting mechanics.
