Enjoy the long weekend, if only for a second

The world is about to get a well-earned long weekend ? but don't make big plans, because it will only last an extra second.

A so-called 'leap second' will be added to the world's atomic clocks as they undergo a rare adjustment to keep them in step with the slowing rotation of the earth.

To achieve the adjustment, on Saturday night atomic clocks will read 23 hours, 59 minutes and 60 seconds before moving on to midnight Greenwich Mean Time.

Super-accurate atomic clocks are the ultimate reference point by which the world sets its wrist watches.

But their precise regularity ? which is much more constant than the shifting movement of the earth around the sun that marks out our days and nights ? brings problems of its own.

If no adjustments were made, the clocks would move further ahead, and after many years the sun would set at midday. Leap seconds perform a similar function to the extra day in each leap year which keeps the calendar in sync with the seasons.

The grandly named International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), based in Paris, is responsible for keeping track of the gap between atomic and planetary time and issuing international edicts on the addition of leap seconds.

"We want to have both times close together, and it's not possible to adjust the earth's rotation," Daniel Gambis, head of the Earth Orientation Center of the IERS, told Reuters.

Gambis said the turning of the earth and its movement around the sun are far from constant.

In recent years a leap second has been added every few years, slightly more infrequent than in the 1970s despite the long-term slowdown in Earth's rotation caused by tides, earthquakes and a host of other natural phenomena.

Adjustments to atomic clocks are more than a technical curiosity.

A collection of the highly accurate devices are used to set Coordinated Universal Time which governs time standards on the world wide web, satellite navigation, banking computer networks and international air traffic systems.

There have been calls to abandon leap seconds but a meeting of the International Telecommunications Union, the U.N. agency responsible for international communications standards, failed to reach a consensus in January.

"They decided not to decide anything," says Gambis, adding that another attempt will be made in 2015.

Opponents of the leap second want a simpler system that avoids the costs and margin for error in making manual changes to thousands of computer networks. Supporters argue it needs to stay to preserve the precision of systems in areas like navigation.

Britain's Royal Astronomical Society says the leap second should be retained until there is a much broader debate on the change.

"This is something that affects not just the telecom industry," said RAS spokesman Robert Massey. "It would decouple time-keeping from the position of the sun in the sky and so a broad debate is needed."

Time standards are important in professional astronomy for pointing telescopes in the right direction but critical systems in other areas, not least defense, would also be affected by the change.

"To argue that it would be pain free is not quite true," Massey said.

A decision is not urgent. Some estimate that if the current arrangement stays, the world may eventually have to start adding two leap seconds a year. But that is not expected to happen for another hundreds years or so.

In the meantime, Massey plans to use his extra second wisely this weekend. "I'll enjoy it with an extra second in bed," he said.

Pet grooming for summer | Systems Analysis

An unseasonably warm winter in most parts of the country also means that the fleas and ticks will be in full force this summer, and grooming is one more way you can regularly check your pet for issues. Try these grooming tools to keep your pets in top shape from nose to tail.

Slicker brush: These flat brushes typically feature fine, stainless steel bristles that help remove dead hair, mats and tangles from a pet?s coat.

Victoria Park, owner of Park Pet Supply in Atlanta, says self-cleaning varieties get top billing during this time of the year, particularly for long-haired dogs. Regardless of which version you choose, regular brushing is essential if you want to fight shedding and tackle tangles before they get worse.

?Grooming is so much more important once it does get hot,? says mobile pet groomer Michael Bryant of Snazzy-Pet USA in Atlanta. ?To help an animal stay cool, you don?t always have to shave them down. You can also increase the grooming frequency.?

Brush dogs before bath time or your daily stroll around the neighborhood. Cats also need regular grooming, and Bryant recommends starting early so they get acclimated to the process. Cats have much thinner skin than dogs — and cat bites can cause more harm, so it pays to proceed with caution.

?It?s crucial to keep a cat calm during grooming,? he says. ?A cat can make itself very, very sick during the grooming process, especially geriatric cats. I can?t stress enough how important it is to maintain that animal?s state of calm — with no jerky movement, no sudden noises, nothing that makes a cat agitated; and start when they are young.?

MNN: Tips for saving time, money and water while grooming

Groomer Philip Hendricks of Preferred Pet Grooming recommends creating a routine that begins with brushing and ends with a bath. Use that time to examine your pet.

?Grooming is not just for aesthetics,? says Hendricks, who grooms at The Ark Animal Hospital in Atlanta and often alerts veterinarians when he detects health issues. ?During this time of year, feel around and make sure there are no ticks or parasites on the animal.?

Toothbrush: In her column for WebMD, Dr. Ann Hohenhaus ranked dental disease among the top five health issues facing American pets. Regular tooth brushing — for cats and dogs — reduces the risk for periodontal disease as well as costly dental procedures. A $6 pet toothbrush and some peanut butter-flavored toothpaste can be much more fun than spending $400 to $1,000 on a vet bill.

Dr. Louise Murray of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals advises brushing at least three times a week. Bryant recommends enzymatic toothpaste specifically formulated for pets to help get the job done.

?Once you stop the actual brushing, the enzyme will still be working,? he says. ?For a dog that doesn?t like teeth brushing, you can take your finger or a finger toothbrush and rub that toothpaste across their teeth.?

MNN: How to protect your pet from costly vet bills

Dematting rakes: Bryant and Park consider dematting combs or rakes essential tools of the grooming trade. With use, you can prevent tangles and mats from getting worse. ?The mats will only get tighter against the dog?s skin,? Bryant warns. ?Once that happens, dirt, bacteria and possibly parasites can get mixed up in that mat and it can become nasty, tangled, often smelly and — in worse cases — even oozy.?

Long-haired breeds such as Maltese and shih tzus are prone to mats, making regular brushing essential. Once the mats set in, you risk hurting a dog or cat during grooming, so a good offense is the best defense.

Curry comb: Hendricks grew up grooming horses on a farm. Tools like the curry comb got frequent use during the spring. Many of those tools are now part of his pet-grooming arsenal. Short-haired pets like my Lulu benefit from regular grooming sessions with a curry comb, which can help loosen dirt and hair before a bath. Those nubby rubber bristles also keep short coats shiny while gently massaging your pet?s skin.

Shedding blade: It may look and sound like a torture device, but shedding blades are essential tools to help remove dead, loose hair. A few rounds with this tool mean fewer stray hairs on your clothes or clogging your drain. Park recommends it for long or short-haired pets.

MNN: How to protect your dog?s pearly whites

Furminator or fine-toothed comb: If your pet sheds heavily, consider regular grooming with a fine-toothed comb, particularly before bath time. The Furminator, a line of fine-toothed combs created by professional groomer Angie Porter, has gained a cult-like following among pet owners for its ability to remove a pet?s undercoat with little fuss.

?It actually does significantly reduce shedding,? Bryant says. ?It really helps cut down on the shedding and gets rid of dead hair on the dog?s coat.?

Compared to most grooming tools, the Furminator isn?t cheap. Most products in the line top $35. If price is a factor, consider scheduling bath time at do-it-yourself facilities that stock Furminators for clients. Park also steers customers to less expensive variations from companies such as Shed Magic.

Nail clippers: Keep those nails trimmed, especially if you have a cat that likes to climb or a dog that jumps on houseguests. Bryant notes that nail growth can vary based on the animal, so ask your groomer or vet when it?s best to trim. As a general rule, he tells owners of long-haired dogs to grab the clippers when they see fur growing between the pads of the animal?s feet. To avoid the risk of injury to you or the pet, try to keep animals calm during nail trimming sessions. If the process creates too much drama, leave it to the pros.

Regardless of what tools you choose, be sure to incorporate grooming into your regular pet care routine this summer. It can lead to less expensive sessions with professional groomers.

?Bathing and being able to brush and care for a dog is part of companion dog training,? Hendricks says. ?It helps you maintain a rapport with the animal; otherwise those grooming sessions are a shock for them and a hassle for you.?

Rugby Union: Lancaster grateful to retiring pair

Stuart Lancaster has thanked Charlie Hodgson and Lee Mears for their services to side after they retired from international rugby.

Both Hodgson and Mears have found themselves down the pecking order at fly-half and hooker respectively, with the likes of Owen Farrell, Toby Flood and Dylan Hartley favoured by the England head coach.
With the pair coming towards the end of the careers and England looking to build for the 2015 World Cup, the duo have decided to quit international rugby.
Lancaster admitted he has been in talks with Hodgson and Mears recently and it was decided that now would be the appropriate time to focus on club rugby.
He said: "I cannot thank them enough for the support they have given me and this young squad as we move forward.
"I had chats with both of them in South Africa and our thoughts were not too dissimilar - that if we are building a team for 2015 then, just as we did in January, we have to decide on which players will take us forward and be in the mix in three years' time."

Here are some betting tips from Betfair's tipsters:

City's European Green Capital bid

Bristol will discover later whether its green credentials are good enough for the city to be named the most environmentally friendly in Europe.

The race to be European Green Capital in 2014 is coming to an end with three out of the original 18 bidding cities still in contention - Copenhagen, Frankfurt and, smallest of all, Bristol.

It is not an award that comes with a hefty cash prize - in fact Bristol wouldn't win a penny, just a title.

But the city council has researched the fortunes of previous winners and claims that being Green Capital could bring a thousand jobs to green industries in the city, and media coverage over the winning year worth ?1m.

These are figures to be taken with a sizeable pinch of salt though as there have only been three previous winners in this young competition.

On paper, Copenhagen (population: 541,989) seems an obvious choice.

Traffic gridlock

In the Danish capital, 35% of the population already cycle to work or school. New parks are being established so Copenhagen can meet its target of having a beach or green space within 15 minutes' walk for every resident. It also wants the entire city to be powered by renewables in 2025.

And Frankfurt (population: 664,838) can boast that it has managed to considerably reduce both its water consumption and the amount of waste it produces despite the city growing in size.

Bristol goes into this final elimination stage as the underdog?

End Quote

So with Bristol (population: 441,300) famed for its traffic gridlock, expensive public transport and poor air quality, it seems lucky to have gotten this far.

But this is not a competition based just on your current performance levels. Cities are also ranked according to how they plan to improve their lot and Bristol has come up with a strategy or two.

The judges were so persuaded by Bristol's level of planning that in the first round of scoring it actually came top for air quality, noise pollution and climate change.

Plans for the future aside, Bristol also has a strong story to tell as the country's only official Cycling City, as the home to green institutions like Sustrans, the Soil Association, ethical bank Triodos and the Environment Agency, and as a place rich in green space with the countryside never far away.

Street parties

It has also topped urban league tables for recycling, though the closest Bristol will now come to the return of trams is most likely bendy buses on guiding concrete rails.

And it has also been noted that while there have been German (Hamburg) and Scandinavian (Stockholm) winners of the EU Green Capital title before, it has yet to come back to Britain.

Were it to do so, Bristol would have to stage a year of green-themed activities in 2014. Its provisional plan is for 300 sustainability-themed street parties and an arts fiesta called The Festival of the Amazing.

Whether you see this award as a meaningless accolade or the passport to burgeoning eco-prosperity, Bristol goes into this final elimination stage as the underdog. But then that is a position the city has always seemed to relish.

Learn Effective Personal Finance Practices With Our Tips

Don?t make the mistake of neglecting to maintain your home or your vehicle in an attempt to save money. Doing maintenance is a way to safeguard yourself from serious problems in the future. By taking care of the things that belong to you will save more money as time passes.

Almost everyone makes mistakes with their finances. You can request a waived fee for a one-time bounced check from your bank. This is usually a one-time courtesy that banks extend to good customers.

If you?re not yet 21 years of age and are looking for a credit card, you should know that things have changed recently. In the past, it was very easy for a college student to get a credit card. You must have a cosigner or an income that can be proven. Read the literature of a credit card offer before you apply for it.

Utility bills are an expense that you must stay on top of to improve your credit rating. Paying them late can damage your credit rating. Your credit rating will suffer if you pay late and you may also pay late fees too. Avoid the troubles that are associated with paying bills late by always paying your bills in a timely manner.

Using small steps can help to rebuild your personal finances. Forgo that daily stop at the cafe and make your own coffee instead. By doing this, it will help keep $25 in your pocket. Replace your auto commute with a public transit ride. Doing this can easily save you a couple hundred dollars every month. You can add this money up to use for any big investments you might have in the future. Those are definitely worth more than a single cup of coffee.

If you want to buy a big-ticket item on credit in the near future, raise your credit score before doing so. There are a couple of ways to do this. You can either take out a small personal loan and repay it on an accelerated schedule, or open a couple of credit cards and build an excellent payment history. Try paying more than your minimum on every bill.

Pay off your credit card accounts with the highest interest rate first. The higher interest cards will cause you the most over time, as it is imperative to reduce these immediately. This is very important, since credit rates are expected to rise soon.

Stop spending money on things that promise you money overnight. Internet marketing, for example, is a field that makes it all too easy to waste more money than one makes back. If you execute what you pay to learn, then your profits will increase greatly.

Invest overseas a bit as well. The easiest way to do this is by getting a mutal fund, a no-load type. This type of mutual fund is diverse and cuts down on the amount of research to do beforehand.

To save money, experiment with name, store and generic brand foods and products. A lot of the time the store brand is almost the same as the original, with a lower price. Compare the ingredients of your favorite brand with the ingredients of the off brand products to see how similar they actually are. Purchasing generic food items can save you money, so give them a try.

Don?t neglect a flexible spending account, if you have one. Flexible spending accounts can really save you cash, especially if you have ongoing medical costs or a consistent daycare bill. With such an account, you can deposit money directly, before it gets taxed. There are rules to set one up; a tax professional can help.

If you are married, you should have the spouse with the best credit apply for loans. If you have bad credit, take the time to build it with a credit card that you pay off regularly. Once you are both happy with your credit score you?ll be able to get loans and spread the debt out more evenly.

As was discussed previously, good money management as well as bad dominates every part of your life. Be sure that you maximize these good things by incorporating these guidelines into your personal finances.

Need A Credit Card? Use This Information

Credit cards have almost become naughty words in our society today. Our dependence on them is not good. Many people don?t feel as though they could live without them. Others know that the credit history that they build is essential, in order to have many of the things we take for granted such as a car or a home. This article will help educate you about their proper usage.

Take advantage of security features that your credit card company might offer. These might include things like adding your picture to your credit card. This is an additional step that merchants can use to verify that you are the person using the card, allowing them to help you keep your card safe from criminal activity.

An important tip when it comes to smart credit card usage is, resisting the urge to use cards for cash advances. By refusing to access credit card funds at ATMs, you will be able to avoid the frequently exorbitant interest rates, and fees credit card companies often charge for such services.

Shred old credit card receipts and statements. You can easily purchase an inexpensive home office shredder to handle this task. Those receipts and statements, often contain your credit card number, and if a dumpster diver happened to get hold of that number, they could use your card without your knowledge.

If you have any credit cards that you have not used in the past six months, then it would probably be a good idea to close out those accounts. If a thief gets his hands on them, you may not notice for a while, because you are not likely to go looking at the balance to those credit cards.

Most people would agree that credit cards have a useful role to play in everyday personal finances. The important thing to understand is that along with the convenience they can offer, comes the necessity of adhering to strict principles of appropriate usage. The tips and guidance contained in this article can provide an important framework for the wise management of your personal finances.

Got window treatments long island Home Improvement Plans? Read This Advice!

When your appliances fail or become outdated, you may be thinking that it?s time to spruce up that kitchen with new cabinetry and some new countertops and flooring. There are many types of home improvement jobs people attempt to do for many reasons. Before you pull out that tape measure, though, take a few minutes to read these tips.

To make a small, cramped kitchen look larger, use lighter finishes for flooring, cabinets, counter tops, and walls, and leave the windows untreated or minimally treated to let in more light. All of these tricks help to create the illusion of a larger room, and the brightness will add further appeal while you spend time there.

You have to realize the there is a bigger market for more modern people. Even if you enjoy your old style ovens and refrigerators, you will have to modernize it. Try making everything a similar color like a stainless steel refrigerator and painting your walls a grey or white color.

If you are trying to remove wallpaper as part of a home improvement project, especially if you are removing wallpaper with paint on top, consider renting a wallpaper steamer. On plaster walls, a wallpaper steamer can greatly speed up the process of wetting and scraping the wallpaper. However, you should take great care when using a wallpaper steamer on drywall, as the drywall is very easily damaged with all the scraping and steam.

Will Mobile Cell Phones Cause Severe Problems With the ...

Mobile cell phones are the fasted growing and hottest electronics on the market today. At least 80% of every household has at least one cell phone. Cell phones are not lethal to human health but are to the environment.

Cell phones contain many harmful chemicals such as Cadmium and Lead. These are two of the most serious chemicals that can damage this environment. Are you thinking that what can a few phones do to this world? They are doing damage this second. Every year 80 million phones are bought and that number is growing even more rapid as new companies rise and phones day by day get cheaper. Nowadays, users can get phones for less than $10 or even free! All these phones contain harmful chemicals that will damage our environment if not taken care of.

Well our government and private companies have come together to allow us the opportunity to Recycle our Cell Phones. These recycling programs will safely reuse and recycle the phones so that 80 million phones a year can be made from already made phones. This will dramatically help our environment because new phones with new materials will be less likely. When using these programs, people will be compensated. Most of the recycling companies provide users with money for their phone. The companies look at the market value of the phone and determining on that pay for the phone. Winter Preparation For Your Horses ? Pets

Winter starts early in some parts of the planet and later in others. Some areas also don?t have any winter to speak of. Because of this, some horse owners start to struggle with early winter.

Plenty of pony owners will see their horses put on a thick, woolly winter coat. I have heard this debate many a time in my life: Is it better to leave horses to fight cold with their natural defence mechanisms or should they receive aid of the type blankets can supply them with? Clearly, different horse owners will show you that they have answered this question for themselves in different ways. Some let their horse fight cold the natural way, others swaddle their dear horses in a lot of protective layers.

Whatever your own call is you need to be consistent and stick to your decision. If you?re in the practice of blanketing your horses, you will wish to constantly give them that protection. If you wish to blanket your horses, you do so whenever the temperature drops below fifty. You?ve got to consider that leaving a blanket for an extended time period at higher temperatures may actually become suffocatingly hot for your horses. You?ll also need to get another blanket. If one of your blankets gets wet, you?re going to have to use the other one. Pony coats can get saturated with water and if that occurs you want to dry them out immediately. If the blanketed horse gets his blanket wet, he?s going to need another one because the previous one will be weighing his hair down, permitting cold water to come in touch with his skin.

Horses who are left to battle the cold themselves will manage fine. All horses grow a shaggy woollen coat because nature cannot give them blankets. This coat tends to fluff up during spells of dreadful cold, therefore efficiently retaining body heat. The horse stays fine even if it snows. In reality, the snow essentially makes for an extra layer of insulation that keeps the pony warm. It is only when temperatures plunge below 18 degrees F that the horses really start to feel the cold. At such times, they find it more difficult to keep themselves warm.

Whether outfitted with a blanket or not, horses of both the blanketed and the non-blanketed choice find the going tough when rain comes pelting down hard.

Under most usual circumstances, you may be confident your horse will stay fine whether you give him a blanket or not. That applies even for small yearlings and weanlings that have put on their woolly winter coats. If you are seriously nervous about a foal that?s very recently born, you can give it a foal blanket. You must remember to keep your barn well ventilated.

Make sure to periodically break up frozen water troughs if they are not equipped with heaters. You must also check if your horses have easy access to clean water, regardless of if they generally tend to drink less in the cold. If your water troughs are equipped with heaters, keep a sharp eye out for electrical shorts and other glitches that may cause malfunction and give electrical shocks. Horses drink a lot more water that is just a bit warmer than freezing cold water.

Utah Sen. Hatch seems to have weathered GOP storm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? It was an entertaining exchange, as one-man debates go.

Dan Liljenquist, hoping to shock the political world on Tuesday, didn't let Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch's absence this month stop him. The GOP challenger opened his show with the usual call for new leadership in Washington, took questions from a pretend moderator and used a video recording of old Hatch interviews and speeches to provide the incumbent's response.

Hatch had his own play for the cameras the next afternoon. He met Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney at the Salt Lake City airport and walked with him to an awaiting car as TV stations got the shot.

If there's one political endorsement that matters in Utah, it's Romney's. He graduated from Brigham Young University, oversaw the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and carried more than 90 percent of the vote in the state's GOP presidential primary in 2008.

The two scenes captured the political dynamics at work leading up to Tuesday's Senate primary.

Liljenquist, 37, had no alternative but to undertake some unorthodox moves to get voters' attention, Hatch, 78, let his campaign treasury of nearly $10 million and other GOP leaders make his case for a seventh and final term. Sensing he's far ahead in a state where the Republican primary winner is the heavy favorite in November, Hatch has bobbed, weaved and carefully avoided any mistakes that could lead to a surprise loss.

Hatch's strategy underscores the diminished threat to his 36-year tenure in Washington.

Under Utah's unique system for picking GOP Senate candidates, delegates to the party's state convention get the first crack. If any one candidate gets 60 percent of them, there is no primary. Hatch won 59.2 percent of the more than 3,900 convention delegates in April, 32 votes short of the number needed to avoid a runoff with Liljenquist. He had told activists, "It will be my last six years in the U.S. Senate, but they'll be the best six years and the most critical six years of all."

After watching then-Sen. Robert Bennett go down to defeat at the Utah GOP convention two years ago, Hatch was concerned enough that he spent most of April in the state and skipped two weeks of votes in Washington.

When Liljenquist pressed for a televised debate after the convention, Hatch's campaign said the incumbent's Senate duties in Washington allowed time for only one radio debate. It took place June 15.

"Their strategy is to very much keep him away and out of the state," Liljenquist said. "We're not surprised by that. We think he has a hard time justifying many points of his record."

Kelly Patterson, the former director of the Centers for the Study of Elections and Democracy at Brigham Young University, said Hatch's strategy makes sense.

"Liljenquist doesn't have a lot of money to draw attention to himself and make a go of it," Patterson said.

Hatch has spent the past two years reaching out to his critics while shifting his votes and commentary to the right. The American Conservative Union gives him a lifetime score of voting right on nearly 90 percent of its issues; the past two years it was 100 percent.

"People around here really support Hatch, but they were discouraged by some of his votes," said Joni Crane, GOP chairwoman for Uintah County in eastern Utah. "They always intended on voting for him, but they wanted to get their pound of flesh. People are sending him a message: We want you there, but we're not happy."

Outside forces played a big role in defeating Republican Bennett in 2010, but have been less united in taking on Hatch. The conservative Club for Growth, for example spent about $250,000 to oust Bennett, but stayed on the sidelines in Hatch's race. Barney Keller, a spokesman for the group, said it views Hatch as a moderate who "has moved to the right to save his skin."

"In a lot of ways we already have had an effect," Keller said. "It's not always the win-loss record."

A political action committee affiliated with the tea party movement, FreedomWorks for America, has spent nearly $900,000 so far to orchestrate Hatch's defeat. Yet even that amount puts only a dent in the financial edge that Hatch enjoys.

As the senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, Hatch has taken in $3.9 million in PAC contributions from corporations and trade groups. His campaign has spent about $10 million so far, including $1.9 million just in the past two months.

Liljenquist's campaign has spent $614,000, largely due to $400,000 he loaned it. He served three years in the state Senate before resigning to challenge Hatch. He notes that he led efforts to overhaul the state's Medicaid program and its pension system for state employees

Hatch has confronted Liljenquist's calls for new leadership by emphasizing that he's in line to run the Senate Finance Committee if Republicans take control of the Senate. The committee has oversight over tax issues and trade as well as Medicare, Social Security and other big drivers of government spending.

"Let's be honest about it, Utah is going to have a great advantage with me as chairman," Hatch said in the one post-convention debate with Liljenquist, on KSL Radio in Salt Lake City.

Liljenquist's case is that Hatch has used his influence to increase government spending through pet projects, his partnership with the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., in creating a $9-billion-a-year health care program for children and his vote for Medicare prescription drug benefits.

"I am running, senator, because you could become chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, not in spite of it," Liljenquist said.

Y Combinator-Backed Rentobo Helps Landlords Fill Apartments Without All The Messy Paperwork

Rentobo Logo OrangeLooked for an apartment lately? It sucked, right? You showed up and you had to fill out an application and submit all sorts of stupid paperwork -- credit check, proof of employment, utility invoice (apparently to prove that you can pay a bill), etc. And then, if you're lucky, your name will be pulled out of a hat amongst the other half-dozen people who applied for the same property. Well that whole process sucks for landlords and property management companies as well. After all, they're the ones who collect all that paperwork and sort through all that data. Don't you wish there were a better way? Thanks to Rentobo, there is.

Jim, My wife looked the booth and was brutal with her comments... some good and some not so... but the problem with the permanent booth was that the market place was supposed to have been a "public Market" with craft vendors, artists and antique dealers.... the owners decided the clientele didn't understand the concept and started marketing it as a flea market, so we got flea market customers... they didn't appreciate the artistry that went into my work, or the work of some really fabulous artists that was set up... they wanted quality with flea market pricing... plus they started letting the flea marketers display and the concept just went out the window.

I do a couple of Farmer's Markets every Saturday that has a mix of art/craft booths and farmers.... people come there to shop and seem to be more inclined to spend money.... Last Saturday was the best sale day I've had in a couple of years...

The two big bowls, the silver maple and spalted hackberry are sold, the spalted maple is new and this weekend will be it's first showing... the oak bowl was out last Saturday but didn't sell....

The wine glasses are a novelty thing and I may have to reprice them... I get lots of lookers, but they seem to look, then put them back.... I'm thinking I may be too high there...

I don't have a picture of the booth, but I use two tables, one of which has a set of shelves that displays the pepper mills and glasses, the other table has a pen display and a work area... the bowls are displayed on baker's racks... but I also think last weekend even though I had good sales, I had too many bowls on the racks and it looked a little crowded... going to reduce the number I display this weekend and see if it makes a difference. This weekend is a much smaller market place than last, but has always done pretty well... I never need a Brinks truck to bring home the loot, but still it's done well.

Foundational concept of ecology tested: Purple loosestrife altered life in nearby ponds

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? An elementary school science activity asks children who have each been assigned a wetland plant or animal to connect themselves with string and tape to other "organisms" their assigned plant or animal interacts with in some way.

Once an ecosystem web has been created, the teacher describes an event that affects one "organism." That "organism" tugs on its string. Other "organisms" that feel the tug then tug on their strings in turn.

The lesson is that every organism is important to the health and balance of a wetland and that every organism in the wetland is connected to every other organism in some way.

That's more or less an article of faith among ecologists, but how true is it really? Ecologists rarely have the time or resources to test this foundational concept through experiment.

Now a summer-long study shows that the flowering invasive plant purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) triggers a chain of interactions that ultimately alters the diversity of zooplankton populations in artificial ponds.

The interactions cross traditional ecosystem boundaries, connecting aquatic to terrestrial systems on the wings of dragonflies that exploit, at different times in their lives, the resources of both the water and the land.

"It's easy to say that everything is connected in some way, but how much these connections matter is something that we don't always know," says Kevin G. Smith, PhD, adjunct professor of biology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and associate director of the Tyson Research Center, WUSTL's 2,000-acre field station.

By verifying one of the foundational ideas of ecology, the experiment, published electronically May 24 by the journal Oecologia in advance of print, will help inform decisions about biological control of invasive species, restoration of degraded habitats and similar ecological issues.

A study long meditated

Smith says the experiment was inspired by work his colleague Tiffany Knight published in 2005. Knight, PhD, associate professor of biology at WUSTL, had showed that plants do better if they are near ponds with fish, because the fish eat dragonfly larvae, reducing the population of dragonflies that prey on plant pollinators.

Smith was intrigued by the study because the effect was indirect and cut across ecosystems as traditionally defined. "Ecologists tend to study forests, or ponds, or glades, but there is a lot of border crossing going on," he says, "and Tiffany's study demonstrated that."

His idea was to see if he could find links that went the other way, connecting land to water instead of water to land. If fish affected land plants, could plants affect fish -- or at any rate aquatic communities?

One plant that might tug hard on ecosystem connections, Smith thought, was the purple loosestrife, which produces many showy flowers and displaces native plants such as cattails that produce few or none.

"The flowers make it functionally different from the native plants," Smith says, "so it seemed possible its presence would cause a disturbance that would ripple through the wetland communities."

But it took a few years for Smith to start the experiment.

"Everybody I talked to about it thought that one of the links would fail; that it wasn't possible for every connection from the plant to the aquatic system to hold as I had hypothesized it would," Smith says. "I sort of felt that way, too. It seemed like a long shot."

Eight artificial wetlands

But the tradition at Tyson Research Center is to challenge fundamental ecological ideas with the methods and tools of science, and so in the summer of 2009, Smith finally undertook what he knew would be a labor-intensive experiment.

He and colleagues Laura A. Burkle, PhD, then a postdoctoral fellow who is now a faculty member at Montana State University, and Joseph R. Mihaljevic, then a WUSTL undergraduate and now a graduate student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, created eight artificial wetlands at Tyson, each consisting of a central stock tank and four smaller surrounding pools.

The tanks were stocked with six species of aquatic plants and three species of snails and inoculated with the smaller zooplankton and phytoplankton drawn from local ponds. The remainder of the aquatic community, such as frogs, dragonflies, flies, beetles and bugs, was allowed to assemble naturally.

Loosestrife plants in pots were placed in each of the four small pools. The pools were separated from the tanks so that only the flowers -- and notplant litter and pollen -- would play a role in the ecosystem of the central pool.

The eight "wetlands" thus created were divided into four treatment groups and the number of loosestrife flowers in each "wetland" was manipulated to mimic differences in loosestrife density.

The loosestrife in two wetlands were left alone but flowers at the other wetlands were picked to reduce their numbers to 75 percent, 50 percent or 25 percent of the flowers at the untouched wetlands.

During the course of the experiment, the small insects visiting the pools were regularly counted and categorized, as were the dragonflies and their behaviors.

At the end of the summer and the experiment, the zooplankton and phytoplankton in the eight central tanks were sampled and identified.

What happened?

The scientists were able to track the effect of the loosestrife flowers across four trophic levels, or levels in the food web, and two ecosystems, the terrestrial and the aquatic ones.

The links worked as follows: Wetlands with abundant flowers attracted more pollinating insects; the insects in turn attracted more of the carnivorous dragonflies; the well-nourished dragonflies laid more eggs in the central ponds; the voracious dragonfly larvae that hatched from the eggs altered the diversity of the zooplankton communities in the ponds.

In an unexpected turn, flowering loosestrife actually increased zooplankton species richness, perhaps, speculates Smith, because they preferentially ate a dominant zooplankton species, releasing others from competition.

"To be honest," Smith says, "although the increase in zooplankton diversity is interesting and surprising, I don't think that specific detail matters too much. Nor, is the point simply that purple loosestrife might be affecting aquatic ecosystems, although that is important from a management perspective.

"What matters is that we showed the interconnections are actually strong enough to transmit disturbances through and across webs. We pushed on one link and something four links away in another ecosystem moved."
