Economic hardship argument is tough sell for Ryan in Ohio

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio (Reuters) - Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told an Ohio rally on Saturday about a friend's financial hardship, but his party's narrative that President Barack Obama has failed on the U.S. economy may be a difficult sell in the crucial battleground state.

"I've got a buddy who was making 25 (dollars) an hour who went to make 9 dollars an hour as a cashier at a gas station temporarily with no benefits. That's the story of the American economy right now," Ryan told a crowd of 1,000 people at an excavator factory.

With the tight presidential race potentially coming down to a contest over Ohio and its prize of 18 electoral votes, the question of whether the state is in good shape economically is vital.

The Midwestern manufacturing state, where latest polls show Obama holding a slim lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney before the November 6 election, has an unemployment rate of 7 percent, below the national average of 7.8 percent.

In Tuscarawas County, where New Philadelphia is located, the jobless rate in September was 5.9 percent, down two 2 points from September 2011. Obama beat Republican presidential candidate John McCain in the county four years ago.

Appearing in Zanesville on Saturday afternoon, Ryan's argument about the sputtering economy was given a partial rebuke from a surprising source: Ohio's Republican governor, John Kasich.

"You know the situation here in our state, as you know, we're doing better," Kasich said in his introduction to Ryan, at the start of a two-day, eight-stop bus tour of Ohio.

Like Florida and Virginia, Ohio is a battleground state home to a Republican governor eager to offer sunny economic news that occasionally sounds different from the picture painted by the Romney campaign.

Kasich outlined the economic success in Ohio since he took office in early 2011. Hundreds of thousands of job losses, he said, had turned into job gains, balanced budgets and a growing government surplus. Kasich said Ohio had become the No. 4 job creator in the country and led all other states in the Midwest.

"Not bad, huh?" he asked.

Kasich did join Ryan in saying the federal government under Obama had hindered, rather than helped that success. Throughout the campaign, Obama has insisted that the decision to inject taxpayer dollars to bail out General Motors and Chrysler saved jobs in Ohio where 850,000 people work in the automobile industry.

Listening to Ryan, who held a rally for 500 people at the Zanesville High School on Saturday afternoon, was Bob Kessler, 61, a small-business owner, who said he had seen those economic gains first-hand.

Kessler, who employs 60 people through his electric sign and outdoor advertising company, said business "is good because we made it good."

"It's better this year, a lot better. We've hired people," Kessler said.

While Kessler said he had not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since he cast a ballot in 1976 for Jimmy Carter ("the last mistake I made in politics"), the challenge for the Romney campaign as it scrambles to win Ohio is whether economic recovery in the state will work against Republicans.

Ottawa funds marina, ski hill developments in Ben Eoin - Local ...

BEN EOIN ? Enterprise Cape Breton Corp. will provide a $4-million grant toward the Ben Eoin marina development, which is intended to further enhance the area?s status as a four-season recreation complex.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay, regional minister for Nova Scotia, made the announcement Saturday on behalf of Bernard Valcourt, minister of state for Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

?This investment is part of a long-term vision that will result in the development of a four-season recreation complex in Ben Eoin that will attract visitors and serve as a catalyst for further economic development activities,? MacKay said in a news release.

Ben Eoin Marina Ltd. is completing construction of a full-service marina facility at Ben Eoin consisting of 74 berths and related infrastructure for both local and visiting boaters. The marina will offer a complete range of services including docking, fuel, pump-out, water, power, laundry, washrooms, showers and general boating supplies.

The addition of a marina building with meeting space and common areas will also allow for the operation of a junior sailing program.

The total cost of the project is $4.8 million.

Across the road from the marina, the Cape Breton Ski Club, owners and operators of Ski Ben Eoin, is undertaking an upgrade of the not-for-profit ski facility which includes improvements to the beginner area, the addition of a new novice run, the installation of a carpet lift as well as improvements to the facility?s lighting, grooming and snow-making capacity.

The total cost of the work is $905,000 and Ottawa is providing a grant of $695,000 through ECBC.

Ben Eoin is also home to The Lakes golf course. It?s hoped the area is poised to attract additional private sector commercial and residential investment which will create further employment and related economic activity.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a federal Crown corporation offering programs in support of commercial development, community development, environmental stewardship and real property development on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.

Personal Training Can Transform Your Life In ... - Hive Health Media

It?s funny how having a personal trainer has impacted on so many aspects of my life; I couldn?t have believed this if someone had tried to convince me before I started my new regime. Yet once I made the momentous decision to start personal training, having been ?encouraged? by my wife and the honest comments of my young daughter, the rest simply fell into place.

Obviously employing a personal trainer is an added expense and one we have to think carefully about before signing up, but the odd thing is, this new regime has made me focus on every part of my life. I seem to have a clear head for the first time in years.

Let me explain. I work out twice a week and now run too most days, initially I felt quite wiped out but now I have more energy for everything. Once I reach home and shower I am ready for action. Suddenly I found myself looking at the way I managed my life from work ethic to finances. Having cleared my diet of foodstuffs that seemed to slow me down I thought it was time to tackle the money side. With assistance from my wife, who has cheered me on throughout, we sat down and looked at how we spent our money. We were shocked to see our take away bill each month, our trips to the supermarket, the added bars of chocolate and bottles of wine added to the petrol bill; the list was endless and the sums were enormous!

We actually made the decision we could both afford personal trainers by cutting back on processed and read- made food, shopping carefully and choosing more healthy options for our down time than flopping on the sofa with a DVD and associated snacks/ alcohol etc.

Something about feeling fitter seems to change the wiring in my brain; I am able to concentrate for longer; clothes I had abandoned now fit and that bloated, lethargic feeling which dogged me has disappeared. I laugh when I think I am even saving on indigestion remedies too! It appears that a three month stint of personal training has gone far beyond simply improving my muscle definition.

I know I could never have achieved this much without my personal trainer who has offered me every support and designed a bespoke programme to target my body; the results are simply spectacular. OK I won?t be going on a modelling shoot any time soon but I feel great and I am proud to see what has been achieved so far and that gives me considerable satisfaction.

Quick fix diets and the plethora of dieting pills and potions can never really match sustained and regular exercise with a professional watching over your every move. We all know that resistance training can make a difference but I could never be bothered in the past, it all seemed too much effort. However, I can now see it has speeded up my weight loss and resulted in stronger bones, muscles and ligaments too. If this isn?t worth the financial outlay I don?t know what is.

So, I can only say that in terms of confidence, strength, fitness and the associated differences in every aspect of my life and relationship personal training could actually make a considerable difference for many people. Think again before you dismiss it as a vanity project or something that?s prohibitively expensive. Having spring cleaned my life I can assure anyone reading this I spent far more on things which didn?t have any benefit at all. I have also taken charge of my own health and setting the right standard for my young family

My WordPress Website ? insurance agent-Brunswick

insurance agent Brunswick ME Each year, more automobiles and drivers hit the roads. With so many vehicles on the road, crashes can happen. If you get in a car accident, the auto insurance you have can make a large difference in the experience you have. So how can you find out what type of car insurance you need and the quantity you should purchase? Auto insurance provides you with protection from covering the cost of damage caused to your car or another person?s car and injury to others, yourself, or your passengers, and certain other incidents, such as theft. By not owning insurance, you run the risk of having to pay the total price of the harm or injury you cause others or of repairing or replacing your car if it is damaged or stolen. Liability: Personal injury and property damage that you are responsible for will be paid for under liability insurance. If you are in legal trouble, liability insurance will pay for your defense and court costs. State laws usually require minimum amounts, but higher amounts can be purchased and are very beneficial. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for hospital bills and other medical treatment for you and your passengers, regardless of who was at fault in the crash. It is required in some states and optional in others. State law usually sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: This coverage is available in non-no-fault states; it will pay despite who carries responsibility for an accident. All necessary medical or funeral expenses will be covered under this insurance policy. Collision: Pays for damages to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than an accident, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: Pays for repair and replacement costs when an insured person is in an accident caused by a driver who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-Insured Motorist: Pays for damages when a driver with insurance is in an accident caused by a driver who does not have enough liability insurance to pay for the total cost of the damages. Other policies, including car rental, are also available.
