Five Observations from Romney&#39;s Convention Speech

A hearty congratulations to everyone involved in the Romney campaign for the smashing success of the convention finale, and an equally hearty congratulations to all of those outside the campaign ? like my friends at Evangelicals for Mitt ? who believed that this was the man for our time. ?They persevered through much, soldiered on, and last night they were triumphant.

And congratulations most of all to Mitt Romney. ?It was a long, hard slog. ?He and Ann really had to assess after the failure in 2008. Did they want to go through that again? ?They prayed through it, took counsel, and in the end decided to press forward in the belief that this was Romney?s calling. ?Last night, Mitt and Ann, more than anyone, deserved congratulations, and they were clearly overwhelmed at the site of so much support after dealing for so long with so much doubt and opposition.

It was a beautiful thing to watch. ?Here were five of my favorite moments.

1. What made the speech so successful last night was that Americans finally saw the?character?of Mitt Romney. ?Long-time supporters like myself have known that Mitt Romney is a fundamentally decent human being who truly believes in this country, truly believes in helping others, and truly feels that he has been called to this role in life. ?We?ve wished that others could see it. ?Last night, they did. ?What Americans saw on the podium in Tampa last night was no Romneybot 2012. ?They saw a man of flesh and blood, a man who was visibly moved and emotional throughout most of the speech ? but especially when he spoke of his family. ?A man who speaks humbly of himself but proudly of America. ?A man with an extraordinary family legacy received from his parents and passed on to his children. ?Romney will never be the kind of guy who puts his works of charity on display or who wears his heart on his sleeve. ?But last night Americans got to see that this really means something?to Romney.
2. One of my mentors liked to say: Being a leader means living a life worth following. ?The person Americans saw last night, that was a leader. ?That was a person who has lived a worthy life. ?That was a person that other people will follow.
3. Romney did not say much about particular social issues, but he united a vision of cultural renewal with economic renewal, knitting together the social and the economic and the foreign policy issues that matter to conservatives. ?He sounded the right tone here: ?My mom and dad gave their kids the greatest gift of all.?The gift of unconditional love. ?They cared deeply about who we?would be and much less about what we would do. ?Unconditional?love is a gift that Ann and I have tried to to pass on to our?sons and now to our children.?All the laws and legislation is in the world will never?heal the world like the loving hearts and arms of loving mothers?and fathers.?You know, if every child could go to sleep feeling rest?in the love of their family and God?s love, this world?would be a far more gentle place.? ?Is it sentimental? ?Yes. ?But it?s absolutely correct.
4. As I said in a prediction post yesterday, Romney projected Reaganite optimism. ?He was not angry at Obama but disappointed, eager to turn the face on four years of ?divisiveness and recriminations? and turn toward a brighter future. ?Here?s where it came through the most clearly: ?The America we all know has been a story of many becoming
   one. United to preserve liberty, uniting to build the greatest?the economy in the world, uniting to save the world from
   unspeakable darkness. ?Everywhere I go there are monuments for those who?have given their lives for America. ?There is no mention of?their race, their party affiliation, or what they did for a?living.?They lived and died under a single flag, fighting for a?single purpose. They?ve pledge allegiance to the United States?of America. That America, that united America can unleash an?economy that will put Americans back to work, taht will once?again lead the world with innovation and productivity, and will?restore every father and mother?s confidence that their?children?s future is brighter even than the past. ?That?American, that united America will preserve a military that?s so?strong no nation will ever dare to test it. ?That America, that America, that united America will uphold the constellation of rights that were endowed by our?creator and codified in our Constitution.?That united America will care for the poor and sick, will?honor and respect the elderly and will giving a helping hand to?those in need. ?That America is the best within each of us.?That America we want for our children.? ?Beautiful stuff.
5. If there were two parts of Romney?s biography missing from his convention speech last night, they were (i) his work as a local leader in the Mormon Church in Boston and (ii) his four years in the Governor?s seat on Beacon Hill. ?We heard more about Michigan than Boston. ?It?s understandable ? and probably the right decision ? but unfortunate it has to be that way. ?Romney?s experience leading his fellow Mormons through changes and challenges, supporting families in need and counseling those in crisis, show his humanness, his compassion and his character. ?It?s unfortunate he cannot speak of this too much without arousing the concern of non-Mormons, and especially my fellow evangelicals. ?Romney?s experience on Beacon Hill actually speaks much better of him than his critics allege (I was there), but it?s exceedingly difficult to communicate all the complexities of doing politics in Boston, and those issues were so thoroughly demagogued in the primary that they had to go unmentioned. ?That?s too bad as well, because Romney did some remarkable things in his years in the Governor?s mansion, in spite of what the critics say.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- James Holmes' defense team said their client might have tried calling his university psychiatrist minutes before shooting erupted in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater on July 20.

During testimony, defense attorney Tamara Brady asked Dr. Lynne Fenton if she recognized a university hospital operator's number that appeared on a redacted treatment file for Holmes.

"Did James Holmes call that number nine minutes before the shooting started?" Brady asked.

"I don't know," Fenton responded. It's unclear if Holmes specifically tried to reach the psychiatrist and, if so, why.

Her testimony dominated the nearly four-hour hearing on Thursday in which Judge William Sylvester tried to determine the nature of Fenton's professional relationship with Holmes, whether a notebook Holmes sent to Fenton is privileged information and when Holmes' treatment ended. Fenton also testified she contacted a university police officer on June 11 about Holmes. She said she was concerned and was trying to gather more information.

The defense scored a bevy of victories -- at least temporarily -- on Thursday, winning arguments that Fenton is a psychotherapist and that their professional relationship possibly continued to the date of the attacks. Holmes, still with orange-red hair and a maroon jail jumpsuit, seemed more active and observant than past court appearances. He particularly took notice when the psychiatrist entered the courtroom the first time.

Fenton, who coordinates a team of clinicians that offers mental health assistance to university students, testified that she severed her relationship with Holmes on June 11 -- the last day she saw him before the massacre that claimed 12 lives and wounded 58 movie-goers.

"On July 19, did you have an active doctor-patient relationship with James Holmes?" prosecuting attorney Karen Pearson asked Fenton.

"I believe I did not," Fenton replied.

But Sylvester cautioned attorneys that there might be a difference between when Fenton thinks she terminated the relationship and when the law says it ended.

"I need further evidence," the judge told attorneys, finding for the defense. "Once the relationship is established, it is incumbent that the evidence show it terminated."

Lawyers mostly asked Fenton about the timing of their relationship, how she terminates patient relationships and how she informed campus authorities about Holmes. Prosecutors repeatedly attempted to gain insight into Holmes's treatment. But the defense, led by Brady, objected on numerous occasions, saying the prosecution sought protected information.

Despite the judge's findings, the privilege issue isn't over. On Sept. 20, the court will continue hearings on whether the notebook is covered under doctor-patient laws. That hearing will feature testimony from three more prosecution witnesses and a defense witness.

Among the defense wins Thursday:

* Judge William Sylvester said Fenton's role in Holmes' treatment is more akin to a psychotherapist--which the defense has argued for weeks--than a medical doctor, which the district attorney's office maintained. Information Holmes shared with Fenton is, thus, more protected.

* Absent new testimony or evidence, Sylvester hinted he's inclined to rule that Holmes' treatment with Fenton continued beyond June 11, the last date Fenton saw Holmes, and possibly up until July 19, the day before the shootings. That's key to Holmes' defense because the longer his doctor-patient relationship with Fenton persisted, the longer the defense can invoke privilege.

* Sylvester quashed the prosecution's attempts to delve more into the notebook Holmes mailed to Fenton on July 19, the night before the attacks. The DA's office argued unsuccessfully that observations by an Aurora Police detective were instrumental in answering whether the notebook is privileged information. Holmes' defense team repeatedly objected to the prosecution's tactics.

Three other prosecution witnesses--all law enforcement--testified on Thursday. Greg McGahey, a postal service agent who investigates postal crime, said that evidence suggests Holmes mailed the notebook to Fenton on July 19. Alton Reed, an Aurora Police detective, later testified about seeing the package that contained the notebook through a camera on a bomb robot. Another witness, Steve Beggs, an ATF agent, had his testimony cut short after the defense successfully argued that his testimony was not relevant to the issue of privilege.

Holmes faces 142 counts from the shooting at the midnight premiere of the new Batman movie in Aurora, a Denver suburb.

For most of us, noise is an incredibly good way to get our attention, but that means we want to be really selective about which apps are allowed to make that noise and get our attention. Regardless the reason, or the app, you do have the option to disable them completely.

1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
2. Tap iNotifications.

3. Scroll down to the app you want to disable and tap on it.

4. Scroll down to Sounds and switch the toggle to Off.

That specific app will no longer play notification sounds but you'll still receive any alerts or banners as well as badge app icons as long as you have those options enabled.

Note: Some built-in apps like Mail and Messages, and built-in services like Twitter won't have a disable sounds option in Notification Center, but rather put them under Sounds. (It would be nice if Apple put them all in one place, or even duplicated them in Notification Center for consistency.)

The Arctic sea ice?fell to 1.58 million square miles, or 4.10 million square kilometers, down 27,000 square miles from 2007, the lowest since satellites began measuring the ice?in 1979, according to the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center.

"It's a little surprising to see the 2012 Arctic sea ice?extent in August dip below the record low 2007 sea ice?extent in September," said?Walt Meier, a scientist with the data center.

"It's likely we are going to surpass the record decline by a fair amount this year by the time all is said and done."

The ice?is expected to dwindle until mid- to late-September when the summer melting usually ends, according to the center.

Shrinking of the Arctic?ices alarms scientists and environmentalists because the Arctic?acts as the world's air conditioner, helping to moderate the globe's climate.

As parts of the Arctic?melted, this year has been marked by record heat in much of the Northern Hemisphere, especially across the continental?United States?which has been ravaged by drought.

Most scientists blame global warming for the retreat of the Arctic ice?and there is concern that the growing amounts of open water means the Arctic?will not be as effective moderating the planet's climate.

"These preliminary figures provide irrefutable evidence that greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming are damaging one of the planet's critical environments, one that helps maintain the stability of the global climate for every citizen of the world," said?Kumi Naidoo, executive director of?Greenpeace.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) appeared on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday to address comments made by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a Democrat, on Tuesday.

According to ABC News, Villaraigosa, chair of the Democratic National Convention, told reporters, "You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate."

The comment referred to the Republican National Convention's plan to give prominent airtime to several Hispanic Republicans.

Rubio said he agreed with Villaraigosa but added that the issue was not solely a Republican one. "I think what he's saying, quite frankly, is true for both parties," Rubio said. "Policies matter and, look, the Republican Part does have a challenge. We can't just be the anti-illegal immigration party, we have to be the pro-legal immigration party."

Recent polls show Romney is failing to gain Hispanic support. According to ABC News, an Aug. 6-26 Gallup poll placed Obama in the lead among registered Hispanic voters with 61 percent over Romney's 29 percent.

Romney, who along with Obama will count on Hispanic votes in key swing states, has been seen by many as largely anti-immigrants. His opposition to Obama's Deferred Action plan for illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. fortifies this belief.

Rubio touched upon immigration on Wednesday and said, "We have a broken system of immigration that needs to be fixed and we have a legal immigration problem because we have millions of people who are in this country without documents and we have to deal with that in a way that honors our legacy both as a nation of compassion and a nation of immigrants but also as a nation of laws."

Rubio also said that he believed Romney would replace the Deferred Action plan if elected. "That's what I think you can expect from the Romney presidency and I think the obligation of some of us in the Congress is to find that permanent solution," Rubio said on the morning show. "It was something I was working on, that I continue to work on, an alternative to the DREAM Act that allows us to continue to deal with that issue but not in a way that's amnesty and not in a way that encourages illegal immigration in the future."

Rubio is just one of many Latino speakers planned for the Republican Convention. He is joined by New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Rep. Francisco Canseco of Texas, Texas Senate nominee Ted Cruz and Delaware candidate for lieutenant governor Sher Valenzuela.?

The Pasadena Folk Dance Co-Op invites you to learn dances from around the world. Our friendly group usually teaches the same dances for the first four Fridays of each month, so there is no need to commit to a series of lessons. Just show up in casual clothes and comfortable shoes. No partner is needed.

All ages are welcome. Most of our members are in their ?40s, 50s and 60s, although we have some younger and older ones too. We have dancers of all skill levels, so whether you are a beginner or experienced, you would be most welcome.

Beginning teaching starts promptly at 7:45 pm every Friday. A more difficult dance is taught around 8:30 pm. Following a short break at 9:00 pm for refreshments, we repeat the dances that were taught and then continue with programmed and requested dances until 11:00 pm.

Your first visit is free. ?Future lessons are $6.00 per week.

French jobless total hits 13-year high

PARIS (Reuters) - The number of people out of work in France rose for the 15th month in a row in July to reach its highest level in more than 13 years, in the latest grim news for France's stagnating economy.

Labor ministry data released on Monday showed that the number of registered jobseekers in mainland France rose by 41,300 last month to 2.987 million, in the biggest monthly increase since the 2008-09 financial crisis.

The total jobless figure - which does not account for a threatened wave of upcoming layoffs at companies like Peugeot and Carrefour - was the highest since June 1999, marking an increase of 1.4 percent over one month and 8.5 percent over one year.

President Francois Hollande has seen his ratings slide since he came to power in May as he battles to live up to campaign promises to bring down stubbornly high unemployment amid a rash of job cuts in recent weeks.

The labor ministry said in a statement that the deterioration only toughened the government's resolve to push through measures to encourage hiring.

The government will present a bill on Wednesday for 150,000 state-sponsored jobs, which it aims to debate in parliament in September so the law can take effect in January.

With a growing number of companies announcing layoff plans, the government is also scrambling to limit damage on a case-by-case basis. Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg said in a newspaper interview on Sunday that he would look into union reports that Carrefour was planning hundreds of cuts.

However, the government has so far found few solutions to keep companies from axing jobs even after Peugeot's announcement last month that it would cut 8,000 posts in France by 2014 sounded alarms in the corridors of power.

In another sign of labor market weakness, the data showed that the number of job offers received by the state employment agency from employers had fallen 7.7 percent in July from June, the biggest drop since January 2009.

Labor ministry data is the most frequently reported domestic jobs indicator for France, though it is not prepared according to widely used International Labor Organisation (ILO) standards nor expressed as an unemployment rate of a number of job seekers compared to the total work force.
