Communications Manager

Communications Manager (Temporary 6 Month Contract)

Purpose:

Reporting to the General Manager of the AMS, the Communications Manager will be responsible for the development of an innovative and strategic communications program to support the organization?s mission, goals, values and objectives. This will include pursuing opportunities in internal and public communication including social media.

Reports To: AMS President and General Manager

Supervises: Full time and part time employees

Employee Status: Temporary 6 month term, Part-Time Management exempt

Hours per week: 25

Job Responsibilities:

  • Managing the development of an innovative and strategic communications (non-business) programs to support the organization?s mission, goals, values and objectives; identifying and pursuing opportunities in internal/public communication as well as social media;
  • Manages the goal-setting, budgeting, staffing (recruitment, development and discipline up to and including termination), priority-setting, development and performance of the team responsible for strategic internal and public communications and for generating timely, relevant content for AMS?s website, digital signage network and social media properties.
  • Producing well-written and accurate content for a variety of communications tools such as press/news releases, the corporate website, etc.; managing the graphic design team to produce such materials;
  • Manage the procurement of appropriate sponsorship initiatives (non-business) for the society with external organizations and companies in compliance with the AMS Sponsorship Guidelines as revised from time to time.
  • Ensuring that communication and marketing products, services, and other offerings conform to brand identity; managing the graphic design and marketing teams to create innovative copywriting for materials and advertising;
  • Building and maintaining lasting relationships with departments to stay informed and current of new initiatives; developing communications plans with departments; designing, proofreading and editing various communication material within the organization, including ?The Insider?
  • Enhance overall media relations for the AMS by identifying Public Relations opportunities, providing media training, outreach activities, and coordinating media interviews for AMS Executives.
  • When invited or required attend AMS council meetings as a resource in a non-voting capacity.? These meetings will require flexibility in work schedule
  • Support business marketing, sales planning and promotion as required.
  • Other duties and special projects, as assigned by the AMS President and General Manager.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant post-secondary degree in Communications or Public Relations.
  • Minimum of 2 (two) years? experience in managing a team.
  • Proven experience leading a team to comprehensively develop the wireframe, look & feel and content management system for a large website.
  • Professional writing and communication skills required.? Strong presentation and negotiation skills preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic communication plans for internal and external audiences.
  • Creative, enthusiastic, self-motivated, team player.? Positive attitude ? responsive and customer service oriented.
  • Knowledge and experience in a Windows based computer environment, including MS Office.? Knowledge of graphic computer design programs (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver) would be an asset but not required.
  • Comfortable in relating, interacting and working with university students.
