Swimmer Missy Franklin, the four-time Olympic gold medalist from Centennial, will serve as the grand marshal of the Fiesta Bowl parade in Phoenix on Dec. 29.
She will lead the 42nd annual parade and serve as a special guest at the game Jan. 3, when she participates in pregame activities and the coin toss.
Franklin, 17, is the latest in a long line of Olympians to serve as the parade's grand marshal. They include Jennie Finch (2004), Gary Hall Jr. and Misty Hyman (2000), Kerri Strug (1996), Charles Barkley (1994), Kristi Yamaguchi (1992), Janet Evans (1998) and Frank Shorter (1976).
Franklin, a senior at Regis Jesuit High School, won more gold medals than any other female Olympian in London this summer and added a bronze medal. She set a world record in the 200-meter backstroke.
"Missy's dedication to her sport and her performance in the classroom make her an inspiration to all young student-athletes around the world," said Fiesta Bowl chairman Steve Whiteman in a statement. "She is an ideal person to lead our parade."
Added Franklin in a statement: "I have always loved college football and I am looking forward to participating in this great community event along with my family. It's an honor to join a list of U.S. Olympians who have been a part of the Fiesta Bowl parade."jim yong kim michael bush the host trailer whitney houston cause of death marquette university marquette hilary duff
