Wearing white helps pets find homes | Regional: Berks - Home

READING, Pa. -

You've probably heard the fashion faux pas, "You can't wear white after Labor Day."???

If you're an animal up for adoption in Berks County, that could be the key to finding a new home.???

"He's looking at you. Look at him look at you," Roslyn Bixler said to her daughter, looking through a pane of glass.

Bixler and her family were shopping the sales rack Wednesday. It wasn't for back to school clothes, but instead, a friend for their cat.

"He likes to play a lot, and the kids are getting older and he needs a playmate to run around the house with, so that's why we're here to adopt another one," said Bixler.

The Humane Society of Berks County is running an adoption special. A "Faux Paw," meaning half off all pets wearing white after Labor Day.

"It's a play on the well known fashion trope, one shouldn't wear white after Labor Day," said Dylan Heckart, director of development and public relations of HSBC.

Every cat, dog and critter with white on their coats is on sale. The pet promotion is a way to raise awareness and highlight the problems facing homeless and neglected animals in our area.

Just three months ago, 20 cats, five hampsters and four dogs were taken out of a Reading home on Mineral Spring Road. They were living in deplorable conditions, said officials.

"It runs the gamut here in Berks, we have a little bit of everything when it comes to animal cruelty," said Heckart.

Cruelty and neglect is what never leaves the HSBC short of animals. They are almost at full capacity, so there are a lot of animals to choose from. Don't worry if your favorite pick is not completely white in color, even the smallest amount will get you 50% off.

The sale runs through this Friday, September 7 at the Humane Society's Lindy Scholar Center, 1801 North 11 Street in Reading.

They are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and til 7 p.m. on Fridays.

The sale is also going on at the Douglassville location, 1201 Ben Franklin Highway East. The Holly Miller Center offers cats and small pets by appointment.
